Sacro-Occipital Technique

At Unity Chiropractic and Wellness Center, we are proud to offer the Sacro-Occipital Technique. The Sacro-Occipital Technique is part of the overall practice of chiropractic medicine. It was invented by Major Bertrand Dejarnette in the 1920’s.

Major Dejarnette was a chiropractor and osteopath. In developing this new technique the Major decided to extend chiropractic medicine beyond just adjusting the spine, and came up with simple, safe, and effective way to adjust the cranium, pelvis, extremities, and some organs, too. While conducting the study into this new method of chiropractic care, he discovered a way of adjusting patterns in the body, rather than just one body part. It turns out that the most important pattern involved the relationship between the sacrum and the occiput. His new technique thus perfected, the Major named it the Sacro-Occipital Technique.

How is the sacro-occipital technique different from regular chiropractic?

The most important difference between Major’s technique and regular chiropractic care is the use of indicators. Every adjustment given with Sacro-Occipital provides a signal as to what other places may need adjusting. Tension in different connective tissues at the base of the skull let the practitioner know which individual vertebrae in the spine need adjusting. The first treatment provides a baseline for future care. By measuring tension in those same tissues in future visits, the practitioner can tell whether the procedure is improving the patient’s condition, and by how much. No x-rays are required to obtain noticeable and measurable results.

The main concern of Sacro-Occipital practitioners is the cranial sacral oscillation. This is a wave-like motion in the lining of the brain and spinal cord. It is a subtle motion, but having it, and making sure it is normal, is crucial to the normal functioning of those areas of the body. In fact, because the brain and spinal cord are connected so intimately to the rest of the body, a normal cranial sacral oscillation is crucial to the proper functioning of everything in the body. Adjustments in the cranial area, which are used in the Sacro-Occipital technique, bring the oscillation into balance if it is unbalanced, and can thus correct any other imbalances and cause of pain in the body, eliminating all kinds of issues.

Auto Accident Injury

Injuries in a car accident are widespread and hard to avoid. Thankfully, these issues can be treated. However, they can be very painful if they aren’t managed carefully. Just a few of the most common of these issues include:

  • Herniated Disks
Trauma to the back can cause the disks of your spinal cords to bulge, leading to severe pain.
  • Soft-Tissue Bruising
Tears and bruises in the soft tissues of your body, such as ligaments and tendons, are very common in a car accident.
  • Compression Fractures
Heavy compression during a car accident can cause the spine to press downward and lead to severe pain.

Injuries You Might Not Notice Right Away

Even if you don’t feel immediate pain after a car accident, you may have suffered from bodily damage that isn’t immediately apparent. For example, whiplash occurs when your neck and head jerk quickly. Unfortunately, this damage can sometimes be hard to notice but can lead to symptoms like headaches and upper back pain that seems unrelated to the neck.

Another common issue that isn’t immediately apparent after a car accident is rotator cuff injury. These injuries may cause immediate pain or linger for months or even years without treatment. Even worse, the pain can spread through your body in unpredictable ways. Thankfully, they can be managed with specialized chiropractic care.
